Dirty Bird Cold Brew Coffee Is For Sale!
Folks, after a lot of deliberation, I’ve decided to stop production of Dirty Bird in 2017. The reasons are threefold.
First and foremost, at the end of the day, I just don’t feel good about creating a disposable product. A lot of time and energy goes into producing each bottle of Dirty Bird. The coffee is organic, the bottling is all done by hand, and the finished product needs to be refrigerated, not to mention delivered to its point of sale. After all this, the consumer has a great bottle of coffee (yay!), but then the bottle gets tossed into the trash (boo). Even if it lands in the recycling bin, the environmental cost of recycling is significant and for me, in 2017, unjustifiable. Bottle recuperation would be ideal, an option that a larger company with greater resources might be able to accomplish.
Second, our economic system is geared towards high volume, low wage, mechanized production. In lieu of adopting this model, it’s extremely difficult to make a high-quality, artisanal product that’s affordable for the consumer AND profitable for the producer, reseller, and deliverer. An exception to this rule might be for a pre-existing company who is producing a packaged product as an additional revenue stream for their core business.
The third and final reason is that as I see it, you (yes YOU!) can do it yourself with minimal hassle, less expense, and less waste. Honestly, people - cold brew is really simple to make. Soooooooo simple. Sure you have to plan in advance, and sure there’s a bit of clean up, but it’s heaps cheaper than buying it at the store. And in a city like Montreal, where an ever-increasing number of neighbourhoods have municipal compost services, the amount of waste produced is nominal.
In 2015 I made 12 oz stubby bottles as fast as I could, delivered them as widely as possible, and ran myself ragged as a solo-preneur. In 2016 I stopped production of stubbies, and focused on developing a more-sustainable system of delivering Cold Brew Concentrate, in re-usable containers, to existing cafe’s and restaurants. I also did direct sales of concentrate through the website. In 2017, I’m ready to pass this company on to someone who has a vision for its future, as I step into my next project.
Therefore, Dirty Bird is officially for sale. If you’re interested in adding Cold Brew to a line of products that you already produce, get in touch. All reasonable offers will be entertained.
Until then, happy cold brewing! And don’t hesitate to drop me a line if you’d like advice on how to make your own.
Warm regards and cold brew,
